Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP)
One of the most popular schemes is the points-based skilled immigration category HSMP that was introduced in January 2002 to attract individuals who have the qualifications and skills required by UK businesses to compete in the global marketplace. In this scheme points are allocated for educational qualifications, work experience, past earnings, achievements in chosen field, spouse qualifications. Unlike the sponsored work permit you do not require an employer in order to obtain the visa.
Under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) scheme you may be employed or self-employed, and you do not need permission to change your employment.
After five continuous years in the UK as a highly skilled migrant, you will be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK (also known as permanent residence) and dependants (partner and children under 18) may be included in your application/s too.
As of the 8th November 2006, all HSMP applications are considered under a new enhanced points criteria system. Work Experience, Significant Achievement, Skilled Partner and GP provisions have been withdrawn from the scheme altogether. They have been replaced by more stringent criteria in relation to academic qualifications, previous earnings, age and previous work and study in the UK.

- Academic qualifications
- Previous earnings & previous work/study in the UK
- Age & English Language proficiency
Note: We also represent applicants who need to extend an HSMP application within the UK in the run up to permanent residence - It is important to prepare the HSMP extension two months before the expiration date because in some case applicants will need to sit an IELTS English exam! Not sure? A registered consultant will help you decide on your best option for UK HSMP's scheme.
